A case study

San Jose Jazz

San Jose Jazz, the producer of the annual San Jose Jazz Summer Fest, is a 25-year-old 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to enrich the community through music education and live performance. The organization’s purpose is to enhance the recognized value of arts to the individual and society, to use music and events to bring people together, and to help build a stronger, more vibrant community.


In hosting this three-day festival, ticket sales have been limited to “day-of” cash sales and “will call.” Sitting in the heart of Silicon Valley, San Jose Jazz set out to find a cutting-edge solution that could support online and “day-of” sales of tickets, merchandise, memberships, donations and scanning of tickets. Complicating things further, they needed to support these functions at five E-Gates that had no power, spotty wifi and were staffed by volunteers to process tens of thousands of festival patrons.


VBO Tickets reviewed these challenges and worked closely with San Jose Jazz to implement VBO Tickets’ cloud-based ticketing solutions to support selling and fulfillment of tickets, merchandise, and donations directly from SJJ’s website and Facebook page. By implementing VBO’s “white label” Web and Facebook Apps, they retained their marketing message and reduced the steps for their patrons to check out online. During the three-day festival VBO deployed 25 VBO Touch iPhones with card swipers. These devices, loaded with VBO’s free iPhone App, provided the ability to scan unique QR-coded tickets, accept credit cards and sell tickets at all five E-Gates flawlessly in real time.


San Jose Jazz experienced dramatically increased pre-sales tickets, memberships and donations directly from its website and Facebook page. Because their website employed VBO Tickets’ Web and Facebook Apps, they presented an easy-to-use ticketing solution for their patrons and collected vital patron data. During the festival, they were able to provide their customers with the option of credit card purchases and scanning of the tickets. This solution resulted in minimal lines at the gates with optimal attendance.
